Nutrition

Nutrition

This food has well-balanced amounts of protein, fat, and carbs. Diets that are high in protein and fat, with moderate to low carbs, are ideal for most dogs.

To evaluate dog foods, we first calculate out the moisture. This is called the “dry matter basis” and shows you only the solid ingredients in the food. These estimated “dry matter” numbers are different from the food label, but a better way to understand the real nutritional value of the food. We also calculate the carbs. Find out more

Lamb, Beef Broth, Beef Liver, Carrots, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Peas, Fish Oil, Minerals (Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Manganous Oxide, Sodium Phosphate), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement).

The average dog food we reviewed has 39 total ingredients, with 1 controversial ingredient. This product has 1 controversial ingredient, see below.

Top 5 Ingredients

Dog food ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. So when looking at a dog food label, take a close look at the first 5 ingredients. They make up about 80% of the total weight.

  • Lamb
Lamb is generally a healthy dog food ingredient that adds protein, fat and other healthy nutrients to the dog food. Raw meat contains about 75% water which is cooked off during the making of dog food. This leaves only a fraction of the protein content in the final product weight. We recommend looking for dog foods that also include meat meals in the first five ingredients (pre-cooked meat powder that contains four times the amount of protein).
  • Beef Broth
Broth is often used as a healthy natural flavor or instead of water when making dog food. It makes dogs more likely to eat the food and adds moisture but doesn't provide a lot of nutritional value. Beef Broth is generally a healthy dog food ingredient.
  • Beef Liver
Beef liver is an organ that's rich in iron, copper, and vitamin A and B. Generally, the liver is a nutritious and healthy ingredient that provides nutrients and flavor that makes your dog want to eat the food.

  • Carrots
Carrots are a root vegetable and contain healthy nutrients like carbohydrates, fiber and beta-carotene. We consider it a high-quality dog food ingredient.

  • Potatoes
Potatoes provide carbohydrates (mostly starch) and are a rich source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that there is a potential link between potatoes and canine heart disease. It is still too early to draw conclusions so we cannot yet say if potatoes are a generally high-quality dog food ingredient or should be avoided.

Controversial Ingredients

  1. Fish Oil
  2. Fish oil, in general, is very nutritious, supplying healthy Omega fatty acids and other nutrients to your dog. However, this ingredient doesn't show which animal(s) it's actually made from, making it less transparent and potentially low-quality. Because of that, we consider it a controversial ingredient.

Country of Origin

Newman's Own Grain-Free Premium Lamb, Liver & Vegetable Stew is made in the USA. This means the food manufacturer has to follow high quality and food safety laws, so it’s a good thing.

Meat & Fat Quality

Lamb, Beef Liver, and Fish Oil contribute major protein and fat sources to this dog food. The first two label the animal source clearly. But Fish Oil is a more intransparent and vague ingredient name. Which fish specifically? You simply don’t know.

Artificial Preservatives

This product contains 0 controversial artificial preservatives - really great! Here’s a quick primer on this topic: It’s good to know that ‍not all artificial preservatives are bad. That’s because they serve an important purpose, which is to prevent food from spoiling. However, we consider 11 artificial preservatives controversial because of their potential link to cancer and other serious health conditions.

Artificial Colors

No artificial colors, either. That’s how it should be, nice.

Artificial Flavors

Last but not least, we didn’t find artificial flavors in this dog food. No controversial artificial preservatives, colors or flavors - we love when dog food brands skip all of them. Well done!

Transparency

We love dog food brands that are committed to transparent business practices. If you make quality dog food you should be willing to openly talk about how it’s sourced and produced. That’s why we reached out to pet food companies, asking questions about all their brands and products. Each company had three weeks to reply to our messages.

How Easy Was it to Reach the Company?

Newman’s Own did not respond to our first email but did respond to the second. This longer response time was likely due to having their corporate veterinarian respond. All but one questions were fully answered.

Does Newman’s Own have a veterinary nutritionist on staff? If so, who are they?

We have a team of consulting animal and veterinary nutritionists, including a board certified veterinary nutritionist, that develops our formulations.

(Follow-up email response)

Again, because of confidentiality agreements with suppliers and consultants, I can't provide specific names. Pet nutritionists generally choose to remain anonymous as they often consult for several companies.

Who formulates your recipes, and what are their credentials?

See the previous answer.

Do you test your products using AAFCO feeding trials? Why, or why not?

We do not do animal testing, but all formulas are developed in accordance with the nutritional profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials and based on NRC requirements.

What country are your products manufactured?

Our pet foods are manufactured in pet specialty cGMP facilities in the United States and Uruguay. The treats are made in the US, Canada and New Zealand.  All facilities were inspected by our vice president of technical services, and the ingredients are validated by Oregon Tilth, an independent third-party organic certifying agency accredited by the USDA..

Can your manufacturing facilities be visited?

No.

What quality measures do you use to assure consistency and quality?

All products are manufactured to comply with standards for good manufacturing procedures, and macro and micronutrients are routinely analyzed for determined levels. Oregon Tilth validates the integrity of ingredients for incorporation into made with organic formulas.

Does Newman’s Own own its manufacturing facility? If it is another company, what company is it?

Our products are manufactured in pet specially facilities as described above. We do not identify these facilities for reasons of confidentiality.

Do any parts of your product come from China?

No.
