Controversial Ingredients
Country of Origin
Newman's Own Grain-Free Premium Lamb, Liver & Vegetable Stew is made in the USA. This means the food manufacturer has to follow high quality and food safety laws, so it’s a good thing.
Meat & Fat Quality
Lamb, Beef Liver, and Fish Oil contribute major protein and fat sources to this dog food. The first two label the animal source clearly. But Fish Oil is a more intransparent and vague ingredient name. Which fish specifically? You simply don’t know.
Artificial Preservatives
This product contains 0 controversial artificial preservatives - really great! Here’s a quick primer on this topic: It’s good to know that not all artificial preservatives are bad. That’s because they serve an important purpose, which is to prevent food from spoiling. However, we consider 11 artificial preservatives controversial because of their potential link to cancer and other serious health conditions.
Artificial Colors
No artificial colors, either. That’s how it should be, nice.
Artificial Flavors
Last but not least, we didn’t find artificial flavors in this dog food. No controversial artificial preservatives, colors or flavors - we love when dog food brands skip all of them. Well done!
Newman's Own has a below-average number of recalls for their dog food.
We love dog food brands that are committed to transparent business practices. If you make quality dog food you should be willing to openly talk about how it’s sourced and produced. That’s why we reached out to pet food companies, asking questions about all their brands and products. Each company had three weeks to reply to our messages.
How Easy Was it to Reach the Company?
Newman’s Own did not respond to our first email but did respond to the second. This longer response time was likely due to having their corporate veterinarian respond. All but one questions were fully answered.
Does Newman’s Own have a veterinary nutritionist on staff? If so, who are they?
We have a team of consulting animal and veterinary nutritionists, including a board certified veterinary nutritionist, that develops our formulations.
(Follow-up email response)
Again, because of confidentiality agreements with suppliers and consultants, I can't provide specific names. Pet nutritionists generally choose to remain anonymous as they often consult for several companies.
Who formulates your recipes, and what are their credentials?
See the previous answer.
Do you test your products using AAFCO feeding trials? Why, or why not?
We do not do animal testing, but all formulas are developed in accordance with the nutritional profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials and based on NRC requirements.

Can your manufacturing facilities be visited?
No.
What quality measures do you use to assure consistency and quality?
All products are manufactured to comply with standards for good manufacturing procedures, and macro and micronutrients are routinely analyzed for determined levels. Oregon Tilth validates the integrity of ingredients for incorporation into made with organic formulas.
