Hill’s Pet Nutrition is voluntarily recalling select canned (wet) dog food products due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.
While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.
Pet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian. In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.In the United States, the affected canned dog foods were distributed through retail pet stores and veterinary clinics nationwide. No dry foods, cat foods, or treats seem affected but the story is ongoing.
Here is a timeline of the events that we know of so far:
September 2018
Product codes of recalled products suggest that affected Hill’s products were likely manufactured starting in September 2018 and all the way through December 2018. Some news reports indicate that the later recalled products were distributed nationwide in the U.S. and also exported to at least 57 countries.
November 2018
In November and December 2018, nine other companies start recalling several dry pet food products because of elevated Vitamin D issues.
December 2018
The FDA alerts pet owners about potentially toxic levels of vitamin D in several dry pet food brands.
The affected companies include:
- Sunshine Mills Inc. which sells Old Glory, Evolve, Sportsman's Pride, and Triump dog food
- Ahold Delhaize which sells Nature's Promise and Nature's Place dog food
- Kroger and King Coopers which sell Abound dog food
- ELM Pet Foods (ELM and ELM K9 brands)
- Lidl which sells Orlando brand dog food
- As well as pet food brands Nutrisca, ANF, and Natural Life
January 2019
Hill’s Pet Nutrition issues a recall for select products because of high levels of vitamin D.
February 2019
Several civil lawsuits are filed in federal court against Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. and its parent company Colgate Palmolive.

A lot more heartbreaking stories of affected dogs are appearing on social media.Lawyers “believe that hundreds, if not thousands, of pets have died or become seriously ill as a result of eating Hill's foods with toxic levels of vitamin D” and that Hill's Pet Nutrition "dragged its feet in issuing a recall" for its canned dog food with potentially toxic levels of vitamin D, leading to the deaths and illnesses of numerous dogs.”

"Pet parents who purchased the product with the specific lot/date codes listed should discontinue feeding and dispose of those products immediately or return unopened product to your retailer for a refund. For more information, please contact Hill’s via their website or at 1-800-445-5777.
Hill’s Pet Nutrition learned of the potential for elevated vitamin D levels in some of our canned dog foods after receiving a complaint in the United States about a dog exhibiting signs of elevated vitamin D levels. Our investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error.
We care deeply about all pets and are committed to providing pet parents with safe and high quality products. Hill’s has identified and isolated the error and, to prevent this from happening again, we have required our supplier to implement additional quality testing prior to their release of ingredients. In addition to our existing safety processes, we are adding our own further testing of incoming ingredients.
